Many of us are finding ourselves with extra time on our hands during this Coronavirus pandemic. Why not use some of the extra time for spiritual and self improvement? It is now time for us to not only spend extra time with our loved ones, but it’s also time to invest in ourselves and dive deep into what it means for us to be here and be human.
How do we do this? We start asking ourselves some important questions inspired by the spiritual seekers, educators, and leaders who have come before us.
We’ve compiled our favorite list of self-help titles for you. The information within the pages of these books has helped us see the world with new eyes. We hope that it will help you too. They are inspiring, uplifting and give us hope and new perspectives when we need it most. Click the title of each book below for the full description.
Understanding the Definition of Self Help
Self help is the is the action of self guided improvement in solving a problem, ending a habit or learning new skills. In today’s day and age, guidance often comes in the form of self help books, websites, videos and podcasts. There is an abundance of information at our fingertips.
When Did the Movement Begin
The Self Help Movement is recognized as having begun somewhere between the mid to late 1800s, but it significantly increased in popularity with the establishment of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935.
And one of the movements favorite educational mediums due to ease of accessibility is books.
Self Help books have been gaining steadily in popularity since the beginning of the movement. They cover a wide range of topics that include building your self esteem, bettering relationships, mastering emotions, and learning new skills that help you succeed in life. Self help books cover topics that can help the reader to solve personal problems be it emotional, psychological, or financial.
Why are Self Help Books so Popular?
They help the reader to learn new ideas and skills to improve their lives at a relatively low cost. Also, mental health conditions are on the rise in recent years due to higher levels of stress. Conditions such as anxiety, depression, hypertension, and obesity among others have led many people to look for answers and ways to improve their lives.
Many people are looking to self help books to help them take action giving them a sense of control and hope in the ability to help themselves. This is important in a world that seems increasingly uncertain every day that goes by. (As I write this article during a worldwide pandemic I have yet to understand and cope with the depths of the unforeseeable changes that will result from 2020’s recent events).

One of our favorite apps:
One of my all time favorite self help and meditation apps is the Calm App. It is named the number 1 app for meditation and sleep. The app includes sleep stories, a gallery of soothing scenery and landscape images, relaxing music, meditations on many different topics, and classes from leaders in the health and wellness industry.
This app has helped me during times where I have struggled to sleep at night. On nights where I am feeling restless, I pick a meditation and pop some headphones in and allow the gentle soothing music or meditation to calm my nervous system until I can fall back asleep.
